OLD FORT DAYS: This annual celebration takes place during the second weekend in June in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. It centers around the Billy the Kid Tombstone Race which has gained national recognition. The tombstone, which marks Billy the Kid's grave at Fort Sumner, was stolen twice since the 1940's. The World's Richest Tombstone Race is run through a simple, yet grueling, 25 yard course of 4 and 5 foot hurdles while carrying a 80 pound stone during the four lap race. There is both a men's and women's division which offer handsome prize money to the successful entrant.

Many other events including the Centennial Celebration of New Mexico State Monuments at the Bosque Redondo Memorial. The NM State Monument will host all New Mexico State Monuments for presentations and activities centered around each of the 8 state monuments.

The USAT will host the first of a six race series of triathalons at Fort Sumner Lake State Park. Both olympic and amature races are offered and is sanctioned by the USAT.

Other events will include Native American Dancers, Car Show, Arts & Craft Show, Little Britches event, Goat Roping, and the Old Fort Days Rodeo. Street dances and parade are also part of the annual celebration in the famous town of Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
