“Color Las Cruces” Paints the Town En Plein Air

September 9th, 10th & 11th

The Second Annual Color Las Cruces Plein Air Competition and Community Arts Festival returns on September 9, 10 & 11, 2011. Artists will compete for over $4000 in cash and merchandise prizes and have the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work. Leading up to the weekend will be a three-day plein air workshop with noted artist David Schwindt. All proceeds from Color Las Cruces support the Arts Council’s Career Art Path (CAP) summer camp for kids.

Color Las Cruces highlights include:

• Plein Air Workshop with noted artist David Schwindt on Sept. 6th, 7th & 8th
• Plein Air Competition
• Cutter Gallery Artist Reception for Jo-Ann Smith (in support of CAP program)
• VIP Artist Reception, Award Presentation & First Look Exhibit
• Quickdraw
• Plein Air Art Exhibition and Sale

Color Las Cruces VIP Artist Reception takes place on Saturday, September 10 at 6:00pm. See all the paintings for the first time, enjoy hors d’oeurves prepared by Master Chef John Hartley, wine hosted by St. Clair Winery, and music by the Las Cruces High School Chamber Music orchestra and Latin jazz sounds of Feral Root. Award winners will be announced. Tickets prices are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at www.Las-Cruces-Arts.org or by calling 575-523-6403. All proceeds from ticket sales fund the CAP program.

As part of the three day festival, the Camino Del Arte Gallery Walk in the Historic Mesquite District will feature artist demonstrations by Plein Air Artists on Saturday. On Main Street, local artists including NMSU students will be constructing a sculpture made entirely from collected coffee mugs.

Coffee mugs are now being accepted for the creation of the mug sculpture - Here’s your chance to get rid of those unwanted mugs taking up space in your cupboards! Mugs can be dropped at participating Starbucks, Toucan Market, and the Rio Grande Theatre.

Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere outdoors. Their art work is in direct response to the beauty they find in nature. They use a variety of media, from oils through watercolors and pastels. The public will be able to join in the fun by watching individual artists developing a painting on the spot and can move from painter to painter throughout the day. Guest judge for this year’s competition is Preston Thayer, Director of the NMSU Art Galleries.
